Reaching all the way to childhood, I can vividly recall the power and impact of the endorphasm. The feeling that comes from being physically capable, knowing one’s body, and pushing the limits of this magnificent machine that moves us through life. There are so many examples, much too many to mention, of where movement was the difference between success and failure, fear and confidence, victim or victor, friend or enemy, good decision or bad, mental stability or instability, and ultimately, happiness over sadness. The endorphasm has literally, without a doubt, served me in every capacity, and every circumstance I have encountered; the sun in my personal solar system of endeavor. And the coolest part is it’s not by accident, in fact, it is an undeniable cosmic truth that ties us all together. Our bodies secrete exactly the right chemicals during physical activity that cause our indescribably complex brain to feel euphoria, clarity, connectedness, and inspiration. Cosmic.
This is the part where I’m supposed to try to impress you with my accomplishments so you buy what I’m selling. What I’ve learned is that success and accomplishment is relative to our personal path; what we do with our opportunities and the obstacles we overcome. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rochester Institute of Technology, enjoyed a successful 15 year career in various technology operations/engineering roles including Executive Director and Professional Services Managing Partner. I’ve made some decent business decisions, and graduated two professional firefighting academies first in the class academically and physically at 42 and 44 years of age. I have the most incredible partner and son, some really special friends and wonderful family, and I am physically and mentally healthy and capable. And, I have made plenty of mistakes. However, I don’t think you should care about any of that unless you have an interest in those specific things. My resume is inspiring to some and inconsequential to others relative to their achievements and goals. What matters is if I have done, and am doing the best with what I have to work with, am pushing my limits to drive growth, and am at peace with my path.
The only real and relevant message I want to convey, and more importantly, can convey with absolute confidence is that the endorphasm is the cornerstone of any accomplishments and peace I enjoy. It is divine inspiration through movement.
The endorphasm lifestyle is the fertile soil in which all worthy life pursuits are rooted and the ground that keeps us stable in times of trouble. Feel the endorphasm and you will feel your best life.
Working in Redondo Beach, CA as a personal trainer over 25 years ago, I loved the opportunity to lead people down the path of health and wellness that my career afforded me. My performing arts background provided a unique perspective on the joy movement can bring to life, and physical training was a natural extension of this work.
In 1998 when group X was booming, I found myself in a Bootcamp class at the Gold’s Gym in Hermosa Beach, CA and my life would be forever changed. There were men and women, young and older, every ethnicity, every body shape…and every one of them pushed their limits as individuals and as a collective. It was beautiful. It was like a dance, but with more pure purpose. We were not trying to impress judges or an audience, or even each other. We were all in an unadulterated pursuit of something more basic. I realize it might sound melodramatic, but be that as it may, I will say that we were all trying to get closer to our soul. A form of active meditation facilitated by the energy of something deeper, our own internal motivators, and our body’s natural chemical reaction to physical exertion. As I lay on the floor at the end of class, I realized the experience was profoundly powerful and unique, and just couldn’t shake the idea that I may have been permanently impacted by this simple exercise class. For the first time as a young adult woman, I was amazed by what my body could really do, but maybe even more importantly, how I felt while doing it.
I tried for days to articulate what I had experienced. There was no word or description of it that I could find, although all the active people I described it to, understood what I experienced because they had felt it too! All I knew at this point was I wanted to do it again and again and evolve my profession to serve this sensation, event, experience, whatever it was. I wanted to feel this everyday for the rest of my life, and I wanted to help others achieve the same.
You know the rest of the story. That sensation, event, experience, is the moment during movement when you feel all things are possible. When every nerve is alive, and your greatest passion is front and center, feeding and strengthening your mind, body, and spirit. The endorphasm.
The endorphasm. A word that poetically captures the reason billions of dollars will be spent on fitness services and products this year. A word that explains why, at this very moment, our friends are sweating it out at CrossFit, Orangetheory, Barry’s Bootcamp, The YMCA, the thousands of boutique studios in the world, or on a bike, trail, treadmill, rower, ski slope, or in the pool. Whatever your mechanism, the endgame is the endorphasm. A word that became the most dynamic lifestyle brand because it transcends all physical pursuits. It is undeniable because all roads lead to endorphasm. It is the reason we “just do it” and “protect this house.” It is…the power of the feeling, the feeling of the power.
